The calculator lays your carton onto the pallet deck in the best of its two flat rotations to find cartons per layer, then divides the usable pallet height by the carton height for the number of layers. Cartons per pallet is layers × cartons-per-layer, capped by the pallet weight limit — whichever binds first. It offers the two most common footprints: the US GMA 48" × 40" pallet and the European 120 × 80 cm (EUR) pallet.
Ocean freight is priced by volume (CBM) for LCL and by container for FCL, so your total CBM and pallet count decide the cheapest way to ship a run. A carton that's a few centimetres too tall can cost you a whole layer per pallet — which is exactly the kind of thing worth checking before a supplier finalises the master carton.
